(San Antonio, TX – December 15, 2011)

Texas Physical Therapy Specialists (TexPTS) is pleased to announce the addition of Trigger Point Dry Needling Treatment (TDN) services. The physical therapists at TexPTS receive advanced training to provide the most up-to-date, effective care for their patients. The TDN treatment is now available in all of TexPTS’ clinics located in the San Antonio, Austin, and Tyler, Texas areas.

TDN is a treatment technique that utilizes a very fine acupuncture needle to “shut down” painful or knotted areas in muscles. This causes the muscles to briefly contract and then feel immediate and long-lasting relaxation. TDN is an effective and efficient method of releasing tension and relieving pain, especially when used as a part of a manual physical therapy treatment approach.

TDN is often confused with acupuncture. TDN is a treatment that uses acupuncture needles, but that is where the similarity to acupuncture stops. Acupuncture tends to be a more superficial treatment that focuses on restoring energy or “Qi” to the body. It is thought there are blockages that can be restored by properly placing needles along energy channels called meridians.

TDN directly treats the neuromuscular system affecting muscle tightness, joint mobility, and symptoms of pain and irritation. Clinical nerve testing has shown spontaneous electrical activity which causes the muscle to be dysfunctional at active trigger points can decreased or be completely reduced with TDN. This release can immediately improve range of motion, decrease pain, and improve function.

During treatment patients may feel a cramping sensation, but then feel immediate improvement of their symptoms. Emerging evidence shows that TDN is effective in the management of chronic low back pain and whiplash associated disorders. Patients with the following conditions have found success with TDN:

Common spinal conditions include:
•Low back pain and radiculopathy
•Neck pain and radiculopathy
•Piriformis syndrome
•Cervicogenic headaches
•Sciatica
•Disk related pain

Common lower extremity conditions:
•Patellar Femoral Syndrome
•Patellar tendonitis
•Hamstring Strain
•Groin Strain
•Shin-splints; Compartment Syndrome
•Achilles tendinopathies

Common upper extremity conditions include:
•Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
•Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
•Lateral Epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
•Medial Epicondylitis (golfers elbow)
•Shoulder Impingement syndrome
•Rotator cuff syndromes

“TexPTS utilizes TDN so that patients get better, faster,” states Dr. Andrew Bennett, PT, TexPTS physical therapist and owner. “This results in patients quickly getting back to daily tasks, work, and the activities they love.”
