TexPTS Owner Named Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA

Dr. John Childs Named As Recipient of 2014’s Highest Honor by APTA Board of Directors

(San Antonio, Texas – April 15, 2014)

Texas Physical Therapy Specialists is proud to announce that co-owner Dr. John Childs, PT, PhD, MBA, OCS, FAPTA, and Texas American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) member has been named as a 2014 Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA.

Catherine Worthingham, PT, PhD, FAPTA, was a visionary who motivated others in the physical therapy profession to make an impact as she did – through advocacy, education, practice, and research. The Catherine Worthingham Fellow designation (FAPTA) is given to honor Dr. Worthingham’s achievements and inspire all physical therapists to attain the levels of professional excellence she exemplified. The award is given annually to physical therapist or life physical therapist members of the APTA “whose contributions to the profession through leadership, influence, and achievements demonstrate frequent and sustained efforts to advance the profession for a period of not less than fifteen years preceding the nomination for election”. The designation is the highest honor among APTA’s membership categories.

Dr. Childs has led a highly active research agenda over the last 15 years in collaboration with leading academic institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh, Baylor University, University of Florida, University of Utah, and the University of South Florida. His work has been focused primarily on injury prevention, comparative effectiveness research, randomized trials, matching the most effective treatments to various subgroups of patients, and examining the outcomes of translating decision-making strategies into physical therapy practice. Having received multiple research grants and published over 150 papers, the impact of his work has made significant inroads into defining the value of physical therapy for managing patients with common musculoskeletal conditions like back pain.

Dr. Childs is a partner in Texas Physical Therapy Specialists, a multi-site private physical therapy practice in the greater San Antonio and Austin, Texas regions and Fit for Work, an occupational health practice that provides employers with consultative services to decrease injuries, reduce workers’ compensation costs, and increase productivity and profitability. He has also been integrally involved in establishing Evidence in Motion as a leader in training physical therapists in evidence-based practice both nationally and internationally and promoting residency and fellowship as the preferred training path for physical therapists upon graduation from their entry-level physical therapy program.

“I am deeply grateful for my selection as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA,” said Dr. John Childs. “I am privileged to count among my closest circle of friends and colleagues some of the best people and highest impact leaders (in that order) in the physical therapy industry across clinical practice, business, and academics. While I’m profoundly appreciative of the recognition, we only stand as tall as the shoulders of those who have gone before us and I’m honored to be joining such good company.”

Dr. Childs and other APTA’s Honors and Awards Program recipients will be honored at a ceremony from 5:30-6:30PM on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the NEXT Conference and Exposition in Charlotte, North Carolina. A reception will follow, and all APTA members are encouraged to attend.
