ACID REFLUX OR HEARTBURN?
For some, acid reflux simply sounds like an inconvenience after a big meal. But for those who are suffering from acid reflux (also known as heartburn), it is a serious disorder with potentially life-threatening consequences. When the soft tissues of the esophagus come in frequent contact with corrosive stomach acid, they can be seriously damaged. This damage can even lead to esophageal cancer, which is often fatal.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), are commonly prescribed for people suffering from acid reflux and are currently used by more than 15 million Americans. However, these medications are now tied to a number of complications, ranging in severity from nutrient deficiencies to heart attacks and dementia.
SOUNDS LIKE TIME FOR AN ALTERNATE APPROACH
For those suffering from acid reflux, diet and lifestyle changes can minimize symptoms and heal damage that’s already been done. Being overweight is frequently associated with acid reflux, and losing weight is one of the best ways to relieve symptoms without medication.
In addition to assisting with weight loss, a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables and high in fiber can reduce inflammation and help control acid reflux. It’s also best to stay away from high fat and eliminate highly acidic foods.
If diet and exercise don’t fully control acid reflux, taking a proton pump inhibitor may also be recommended by your doctor but should be used in the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time period.

As the weather gets nicer, we all want to get back to exercising outdoors. It’s important, though, to remember to be adequately prepared so you don’t injure yourself. There are many ways you can prepare – replace worn out athletic shoes and incorporate stretching into your exercise routine!
Wall Straight Leg Calf Stretch
Place both hands on wall with arms extended. Lean against wall with one leg bent forward and other leg extended back with knee straight and foot positioned directly forward. Push rear heal to floor and move hips slightly forward. Hold stretch. Repeat with opposite leg.
