Joint venture involving Spurs docs to expand SA sports medicine

The deal has been in the works for years and is already spawning expansion plans.

Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio has entered into a partnership with Texas Physical Therapy Specialists in a deal that will include new executive leadership and brick-and-mortar expansion.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Under the agreement, TexPTS will operate Sports Medicine Associates’ seven facilities, including four physical therapy clinics, and the combined entity will have a presence across multiple Texas cities, including San Antonio and Austin.

Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio, home to multiple San Antonio Spurs team physicians, will maintain its brand. The Alamo City company, which has a significant presence near the NBA team’s practice facilities in the South Texas Medical Center, will gain access to management and other support services through TexPTS’ parent, Louisville, Kentucky-based Confluent Health.

“Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio has been in discussions with Confluent Health for several years now,” said SMASA’s Dr. David Schmidt, among the group’s physicians who has worked with the Spurs. “We have spent the last 12 months fully engaged in developing what a partnership could look like.”

SMASA Chairman Dr. Paul Saenz said the joint venture was formed to create more growth opportunities.

“This partnership will allow the expansion of sports medicine and orthopedic specialists to advance cutting-edge treatment strategies and emerging surgical techniques,” he said.

Texas Physical Therapy Specialists has been involved in sports medicine in San Antonio for well over a decade. And it’s had a lengthy relationship with SASMA.

“This is a partnership of giants for San Antonio’s sports medicine industry,” said Dr. Adam Roggia, who will serve as CEO of the joint venture. “Expansion plans are already in the works.”

Roggia said work is already underway for a new facility on the Methodist Hospital-Northeast campus in Live Oak set to open in 2023 and additional expansion is planned in San Antonio’s Westover Hills area and in Schertz.”
