Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies
Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), collectively referred to as EMG, are examinations that are frequently performed in conjunction to help diagnose nerve compression, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, diabetic conditions, and other nerve or muscle injuries. The tests are performed and interpreted by a board certified specialist who will use the results to help determine or exclude causes for your symptoms and establish an accurate diagnosis.
Why do Electromyography?
Nerves control your muscles and allow you to move and feel things. When your nerves tell your muscles to contract, they generate tiny electrical charges. When there is a problem with your nerves or muscles, changes occur in the way they function and the electrical charges generated by the muscle are altered.
Electromyography tells your physical therapist whether or not your muscles and the nerves that control them are healthy.
Why do Nerve Conduction Studies?
Your brain sends signals through your nerves to make muscles work and carry messages about temperature, texture, and more. When nerves are healthy, they carry these signals quickly and effectively. When the nerve is under pressure or injured, the signals travel more slowly and with less power.
NCS tells your physical therapist how well your nerve signals travel. The tests are able to locate pressure in the nerves and determine how severe it may be.
